Don’t be camera shy! On June 21st there’s a good chance more selfies will be taken than any other day. Are you wondering why? Because June 21st is National Selfie Day! Founded by DJ Rick McNeely from Fishbowl Radio Network in 2014, National Selfie Day supports local charities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area raising money and awareness for their causes. There’s even an official website.
Maybe you’re not a millennial, but you probably still know what a selfie is. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.” People have been taking pictures of themselves for over 100 years, but the term “selfie” has only become mainstream in recent history. Since the creation of smart phones the selfie has become a staple in our everyday lives and culture. It’s a trend that has skyrocketed in popularity with the dawn of social media. Everyone from the local news team, lawmakers and your favorite estheticians takes selfies. Celebrities might not be fond of paparazzies, but they LOVE selfies. Ellen DeGeneres gave us one of the most tweeted selfies of all time when she decided to take a quick pic with some of her colleagues at the Oscars.
Selfie’s are such a huge part of pop culture that the Simpsons tweeted an homage to Ellen’s famous group selfie at the Oscars and got in on the fun.
With National Selfie Day just around the corner we thought it would be great to share a few fun facts about selfies!
Did you know that selfie’s predate social media?

So many photos
Millennials are expected to take over 25,000 selfies in their lifetime. That’s a lot of pictures. Need more big numbers to grasp how much we love taking photos of ourselves? 24 billion selfies were uploaded to Google last year and that’s just Google!
